The origins of Proper names

Having read "The Gnostic Gospels of Jesus", The Definitive Collection of Mystic Gospels and Secret Books about Jesus of Nazareth by Marvin Meyer, which contains translations of documents uncovered near the modern city of Nag Hammadi, it occurred to me that, as the texts were originally written in Coptic, further analysis of proper names used in the text might lead to something interesting.
The languages involved are Hebrew or Aramaic, Greek, Coptic and English.
Hebrew or Aramaic were probably the original spoken language of Jesus and the disciples.
Coptic is the language used to record the texts.
English is the language I understand and that of the book.
We will get to Greek shortly.

In my reading/research I came across the following:

Goodness - Athoth
Forethought - Eloaios
Divinity - Astaphaios
Lordship - Yao
Kingdom - Sabaoth
Jealousy - Adonin
Sabbataios - Understanding

These are from translations probably origination in Hebrew, translated through Greek and Coptic ending in English.

My question: is there a connection between the pairings in Hebrew?

The idea was triggered by reading about the Third Luminary, Daveithai, appointed over the realms of Understanding, Love and Idea. Knowing that David translates to, or is associated with, beloved in Hebrew, it would be logical, and extremely interesting, that as Proper names remain phonetic whilst their nouns become lost in translation.

I consulted a Talmudic scholar to gain an insight. Although "Athoth" is understandable in Hebrew, it is not connected to goodness and the other names have no meaning. He did suggest that they looked more like Greek to him.

As with many words in the English language, and any other language for that matter, they originate as descriptions of ideas that can be passed from person to person. Look at the characters used by the Chinese, and by association, the Japanese, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. The traditional character for a tree is a symbol that looks like a tree. A forest is symbolized by 3 trees. Proper names are also descriptive, as with my own surname, Ryman, which translates as man of the river. Smith is any of a number of professions, e.g. blacksmith and silversmith.

As an exercise to further understand the truth, I will be translating parts of the Secret Book of John or the Apocryphon of John. Apocrypha originates from Greek apo- "away" and kryptein "to hide".

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

** work in progress **
The French philosopher, Voltaire famously said "If God did not exist then man would have to invent him". What did he mean? Nothing, he was a philosopher that's what we do, we generate thoughts that provoke debate and discussion. His motivations seem to stem from an anonymous publication "The Three Impostors" which Voltaire found denied the existence of a divine being. A precept that, for society, was potentially dangerous in that it put into question the "afterlife" punishment of criminals.
The idea was not new as pointed out by the comedian, Lewis Black, when he said that the Old Testament of the Bible was written to force the Jewish people to fly straight and behave, referring to Hell and a vengeful God. Religious texts over the years have been manipulated in order to control its followers.
From my personal experience, I have felt the hand of a divine being. At age 18, I took a motorcycle trip to visit with my Aunt and Uncle, some 100 miles away from my home at the time. Not being the expert rider that I am today, my journey up there was a little scary. I had no idea what the machines limits were and rode with extreme caution. The visit concluded, my aunt, uncle and cousin took time to pray for my safe journey home. Both my aunt and cousin were almost fanatical Christians, my cousin later marrying a preacher. I felt a little embarrassed by the whole thing and at that age could not really have cared less, but I let them do their thing, mounted the machine and headed for home. Nothing happened, but I felt as if I was floating along surrounded by cotton wool, as if nothing could hurt me. Arriving at my destination safe and sound, I pondered the feelings for years. Perhaps there is something to all this after all. As a further reinforcement to the idea that my aunt had discovered something, she died in her sleep from a simultaneous cerebral hemorrhage and heart attack. Bang, no suffering, no pain, just gone. If you have to go, would that not be the way to do it?
The question of whether God exists or not is further complicated when we consider his gender, color, and other attributes, which is confused when the Bible states "God created Man in his own image". It is extremely hard to believe that God is like us. We mortals are limited by what we can see and touch. We only see and hear in narrow frequency bands. There are other frequencies that we cannot, ourselves, detect. Infrared and ultraviolet radiation are two of many. We are also hampered by language and our 3D universe. To think that God has to be something we can see or touch or even describe is retarded. We do not know how many dimensions there are, because we cannot detect them. It has been theorized that the entire universe can be explained using 10 dimensions, then 11. That is not to say there are that many, only that it can be mathematically modeled that way. We need to look at it from God's point of view, a top down approach. By our definition of God, he would reign over everything, whether it is seen and unseen by us. He is everything. He is the One, the unity that unites everything.
This approaches the Taoist philosophy. A simplistic way of looking at Tao is to think of Tao and God as one and the same. Tao translates as "way" or "path", and God is the "way". Prophets have done there best, given the limitations of language, to portray their visions in a way others can understand, but is probably better thought of as something that can never be adequately expressed in words.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.

There can only be one truth, yet there are hundreds of religious groups around the world that practice and believe a wide variety of differing systems. At a very early age I realized that they cannot all be right. I am on a journey to seek out the commonalities of all religions and any pertinent scientific data in an effort to achieve the ultimate enlightenment.
I was raised by "marinated" Christians, a term my father used to describe being brought up surrounded by a family of believers in Jesus.
I have first hand knowledge of many cultures, having traveled much of the world.
I have experience with a purely spiritual approach.
I have read much of Edgar Casey.
I have studied Artificial Intelligence which for this purpose helps me analyze belief systems.
I am an avid watcher of pertinent educational material.
I follow a taoist path.
I would probably describe myself as a taoist agnostic.

Original post blogged on b2evolution.
